The Kitikmeot Place Name Atlas is an online interactive Atlas that allows Nunavummiut to navigate throughout the Kitikmeot Region and learn about the traditional Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun place names for geographic features. The Atlas was developed based on interviews with Elders and hunters in the Kitikmeot communities of Kugaaruk, Gjoa Haven, Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk. In the Atlas visitors can read about the meaning of a name; listen to how it is pronounced and sometimes watch video interviews with Elders sharing stories about the names. We hope that this online Atlas will ensure that place name knowledge will be passed on to youth and future generations.
The Kitikmeot Atlas has been developed as an online mulitmedia place name atlas. Please visit the Atlas here.
The Kitikmeot Atlas has received financial sponsorship from the Nunavut Department of Culture and Heritage, Carlton University.
