The Kitikmeot region is an area rich with history. For close to four thousand years, various cultures have both migrated through this landscape and made it their home. The Kitikmeot Heritage Society is dedicated to working with professional archaeologists to help document the lives and traditions of past peoples. As part of this process, we encourage archaeological research that involves local elders and youth, and finds meaningful ways to build knowledge about the past and communicate it with Kitikmeot communities through public excavations, oral history documentation and the development of educational resources. The Kitikmeot Heritage Society has worked with researchers to set new standards for community involvement in the archaeology of the Canadian Arctic.
