photo of Uvajuq: The Origin of Death book cover Uvajuq: The Origin of Death

A long time ago, according to Inuit legend, the people who lived across the North were giants, and they lived forever:

The legend of Uvajuq, as told here, was collected from a group of Inuit elders in the Nunavut community of Cambridge Bay, 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. On the surface, it is the story of how this prominent hill near the community was formed. Underlying that is a mysterious tale of much deeper significance.

Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit of the Bathurst Caribou

Written by: Natasha Thorpe, Naikak Hakongak, Sandra Eyegetok, and the Kitikmeot Elders

Caribou have always been central to Inuit identity, subsistence, culture, and tradition. From 1996 through 2001, the Tuktu and Nogak Project brought together elders, hunters, youth, and researchers to record stories about the Bathurst caribou and their calving grounds. Thunder on the Tundra is one result of that project. Based on more than 37 interviews, this chronicle provides a fascinating view into the world of caribou as understood by Inuit from the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut. In the words of the people themselves, it presents Inuit Qaujimajatunqangit (IQ), traditional knowledge, for the benefit of present and future generations.

Each book: $25.00

The Journey of the Stone

In winter it is a land of snow. In summer it is a land of rock. Inuit use that snow to build their iglu. They use stones to make an “inuksuk” to mark the place. For Inuk Charlie, each stone holds an image; he needs only to liberate the piece of art from the stone, he says. This time, he wants to create a sculpture from a legend that the respected elder Neeveovak told him, about the old lady who adopted a polar bear cub.

Length: 49 min.
Each copy: $30.00
Set of 3 Kitikmeot videos: $75.00
